The Trail to Enlightenment

Azgard Farm has "old farm charm" where FAMILIES are WELCOMED, with riding lessons for students from 5 years old to 50+ years young. The students we accept are beginners (we love beginners) to advanced levels for pleasure, competition, or better yet, just self-growth!

We provide QUALITY not VOLUME, by delivering indepth educational information not stuffing as many students as possible into an hour group lesson. Due to our strong belief of providing an indepth equine education in a one-on-one setting, we have yielded to having a new looking facility and are quite comfortable with "old farm charm". Our lesson program is not competition based rather competence based. We conform our teachings to our students, rather than students conforming to a standard set program. These two factors alone stands Azgard Farm well above the rest in equine education.

Our Unique Riding Lesson Program

We conform our teachings to our students, rather than students conforming to a standard set program. We do this in private and semi-private (two people) lesson settings, in which no previous experience with horses is necessary. However, we do offer a few group lessons a week for our more advanced students who may desire them.

For those interested in showing, we teach most seats, english i.e., dressage, huntseat, saddleseat, western pleasure, Sidesaddle as well as driving horses and ponies. We do not offer jumping, barrel racing, or team penning. However, we do recommend to anyone interested in these activities to take a year of riding lessons prior to engaging in these sports.

Our Philosophy Of Teaching

Azgard Farm’s Teaching Philosophy is that a good instructor should strive to become a great teacher. A great TEACHER possesses passion and respect, has the ability to develop insight into each one of their students, find a small piece of the student in themselves, compare the student only to themselves, to feel rather than see, to support, spark, inspire, and to create magic for them.

Why Should Someone Take Riding Lessons?

We get phone calls all the time from people stating that they and/or their child want to take some riding lessons. I always ask the reason for the interest. Some of the most common responses are:

  • My child seems to be horse crazy and I wanted to try her in some lessons.
  • I just want to be able to ride for pleasure.
  • I am not interested in learning anything fancy or competing, just want to ride for fun.
  • I have had a bad experience and I am a little nervous about riding now, but would like to try it again.
  • I use to ride all the time and did really well when I was younger, but never felt like I had total control of the horse.
  • I want to buy a horse but I thought I should learn something about them first.

Lesson Structure Comparison

Private Lesson

Advantages: One-to-one lessons allow the most concentration for both parties – fewer distractions – great for learning something new. The interaction between student and instructors enhances understanding and closeness. Disadvantages: Lacks the advantage of learning by imitation and the interaction with other students that helps develop the ability to work within a group.

Semi-Private Lesson

Advantages: Very useful when students are practicing the same new skill but still need instructor attention – saves money and time. Disadvantages: This is more difficult for learning new skills because there is less attention from instructor.

Choosing A Riding Instructor And/Or School

Not all people are cut out to do this and some are better at it than others. Sometimes even the best instructors have customers whose personalities just don’t mesh with theirs.
